Good Friday, 19th April at 3.30 pm. ‘The Crucifixion’ by John Stainer

On Good Friday, 19th April our church choir will be singing ‘The Crucifixion’ by John Stainer here in church at 3.30pm.

Along with our choir we will be hosting 2 guest soloists and organist:

  • Chris Broughton – Tenor
  • Andrew Buchanan – Bass
  • Philip Tomlinson – Organist
  • David Thornton – Conductor

The work features three well-known choruses:

  1. ‘Fling wide the gates’
  2. ‘God so loved the world’
  3. ‘Is it nothing to you’

As well as five congregational hymns.

Stainer’s Crucifixion used to be staple fare for Good Friday in the days when most churches and especially non-conformist churches had strong choirs.

About David Thornton

I've been Director of Music here at St. Mary's since 2016 and am really enjoying the work. I've been playing the organ and working with choirs since I was 10. I love the Pendle area for walking, cycling and mountain biking.
